Bye, Dad...

Things my dad taught me..

Read like your life depends on it. Read anything! Everything! And if you come across a word you don’t know, use the dictionary and get the meaning. Then practice using the word in the right context. Soon it will be a part of your vocabulary.

Do not be too open to favours but lend help wherever you can. While you might know be focused on a reward for your help, it might be someone else’s priority.

Your appearance is the very first thing people see of you; always be well-dressed and tidy. If you’re going to work, dress for the job you are striving toward, not the one you currently have.

Do not owe. Strive to be self-sufficient. The art of borrowing and owing any sought of debt is a miserable way to live.

If you’re going to do something, no matter what it is, do it to the best of your ability, else don’t do it all. Set that standard for yourself and you’ll always be ahead.

Do not do what I do, do as I say. I am an adult and a parent and my actions will not always make sense to you now.

Empty vessels make the most noise. Listen! Don’t deprive yourself of a wealthy conversation by listening to yourself speak, listen to everyone else.

(When I was 18) If you have the same close friends at 30 that you have now, then you haven’t progressed. This might sound harsh but progression means change and maybe you don’t have to lose your friends but gain new ones and gauge your closeness. Look at the people you are choosing to keep near, what are they adding to your life?

Educate yourself, have a robust opinion and don’t depend on someone else’s ideals. Beauty fades and money can be mismanaged, but an education is wealth.

Forgive for your sake and your sanity, but don’t forget also for your sake and maybe your safety.

Things my dad didn’t teach me..

It’s okay to be open and vulnerable at times. And show emotion. Not everyone is a predator.

There is still good in the world, if I’m open to it.

How to ride a bike.

How to pick a partner, what to look for...

How to make his favourite potato salad.

How to cope without him when he’s gone.

Bye, dad..
